MARCH 9, 1945
SOUTHERN FRANCE

Dear Mother and Dad,
You may notice the slight change of address on the envelope. I am now in the battalion headquarters, instead of regimental headquarters. (there are three battalions in an infantry regiment).
My job is S-3, that is, plans and training officer. It's a good one, and I think I'll like it very much. In a rear area situation the S-3 is the commander's staff assistant for the planning and supervision of training. When the unit has a combat mission, the S-3; depending on what the commander wants; aids in the preliminary reconnaissance, suggests plans, formulates orders, keeps an eye on communications, and aids in the control of the battalion.
After V-day the S-3 will be heavily involved in the education program which is planned to keep troops occupied until demobilization.
I got your letter of Jan. 8 today - telling about the Christmas Tree. Some service.
P.S. The enclosed snapshot was taken on the boat when we came from Italy to France. As you can see, it was quite a nice trip.
